Daniel Scriptures & Guidelines 

​

When we deny our bodies of natural food for spiritual purposes it is important to fill up on the Word of God and prayer.  Use this calendar as a guide for daily Scripture meditation and prayer to maintain discipline while fasting.

​

Day 1: Tuesday, January 2nd | Daniel 1:11-17

​

            Ask God for the discipline to complete the fast and to receive the benefits of it.

​

Day 2: Wednesday, January 3rd | Matthew 6:16-18

​

            Pray to have the biblical posture and perspective while fasting.

​

Day 3: Thursday, January 4th | 2 Corinthians 5:17

​

            Thank you God that we are new creations in Christ Jesus!

​

Day 4: Friday, January 5th | Ezekiel 36:26/Psalm 51:10

​

            Ask the Lord for a renewed attitude and heart.

​

Day 5: Saturday, January 6th | Numbers 6:24-26 

​

            Pray this blessing for family and friends.

​

Day 6: Sunday, January 7th | Isaiah 43:18-19

​

            Petition God for spiritual vision to perceive “a new thing”.

​

Day 7: Monday, January 8th | Ephesians 1:17-18

​

            Let’s ask God for wisdom and revelation to know Him and the power available to all believers.

​

Day 8: Tuesday, January 9th | Romans 15:13

​

            Say a prayer for fresh joy and peace.

​

Day 9: Wednesday, January 10th | Philippians 2:5

​

            May we have the mind and humility of Jesus Christ.

​

Day 10: Thursday, January 11th | Colossians 3:1-3

​

            Ask God to set our affections on things above.

​

Day 11: Friday, January 12th | Romans 12:1-2

​

            Pray for renewed mind that does not conform to the world.

​

Day 12: Saturday, January 13th | Philippians 4:6-6

​

            Talk to God about keeping our emotions and thoughts in peace.

​

Day 13: Sunday, January 14th | 2 Corinthians 10:3-5

​

            Pray to demolish emotional and mental strongholds.

​

Day 14: Monday, January 15th | Ephesians 3:16-19

​

            Let’s ask God to experience the depth of the love of Christ.

  

Day 15: Tuesday, January 16th | 1 Corinthians 13

​

            Let’s ask God to teach us how to love.

​

Day 16: Wednesday, January 17th | Galatians 6:10/Matthew 25:35-40

​

            Seek God about being a blessing to others.

​

Day 17: Thursday, January 18th | Ephesians 4:25-32

​

            Talk to God about changing unhealthy relationship dynamics.

​

Day 18: Friday, January 19th | Matthew 25:25-40

​

            Pray about how to care for those in need.

​

Day 19: Saturday, January 20th | Colossians 3:13

​

            Say a prayer about forgiving others and yourself.

​

Day 20: Sunday, January 21st | Romans 12:9-21

​

            Talk to God about putting love into action to live in peace with everyone.

​

Day 21: Monday, January 22nd | Philippians 1:3

​

            Thank God for people that blessed you.  

​

DANIEL FAST FOOD LIST

​

FOODS TO EAT

​

Whole Grains

Amaranth, barley, brown rice, buckwheat, bulgur, freekeh, millet, oats, purple rice, quinoa, rye, sorghum, spelt, teff, whole grain pasta, whole wheat, and wild rice.

​

Beans and legumes

Black beans, black-eyed peas, cannellini beans, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), great northern beans, kidney beans, lentils, peanuts pinto beans, and split peas.

​

Nuts and Seeds

Almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, nut butters, peanuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, pistachios, poppy seeds, walnuts, sesame seeds, soy nuts, sunflower seeds.

​

Vegetables

All vegetables are allowed (fresh, frozen, dried, juiced, and canned).

​

Fruit

All fruit is allowed (fresh, frozen, dried, juiced, and canned).  However, any dried fruits shouldn't contain added sugar (check ingredients to be sure).

​

Oils

Oils (such as coconut, olive, and sesame, for example) are allowed but should be used minimally.  Avoid deep-frying them.

​

Other

Unleavened bread (whole grain made without the yeast, sugars, or preservatives).  All herbs, spices, and seasonings are allowed, including salt and pepper.

​

Beverages

Water should be the main beverage on your Daniel Fast.  Distilled, filtered, sparkling, spring, and mineral water are allowed as well.  However, you may have 100% fruit juice on occasion (just don't overdo it).

​

FOODS TO AVOID

​

Animal products

Meat (bacon, beef, bison, chicken, lamb, pork, and turkey), dairy, (butter, cheese, cream, milk, and yogart), fish/seafood, eggs.

​

Added Sugar

Agave nectar, artificial sweeter, brown rice syrup, brown sugar, cane juice, corn syrup, honey, malt syrup, molasses, and raw sugar.

​

Yeast

Yeast (and, therefore, leavened bread) isn't part of the Daniel Fast.  For an explanation of why it's excluded, see #1 under "Food" on my FAQs page.)

​

Refined grains

White flour and white rice.  Only whole grains are allowed on the Daniel Fast.  A whole-grain product contains the entire grain kernel - the bran, germ, and endosperm.

​

Processed food

Foods that contain artificial flavorings, chemicals, food additives, and preservatives.

​

Deep-fried food

Examples are corn chips, French fries, and potato chips.  (Baked chips are acceptable if they don't contain restricted ingredients.  Check the label for "baked" to be sure.)

​

Solid fats

Butter, lard, margarine, and shortening.

​

Chocolate

Milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, chocolate syrup, and cacao.

​

Caffeinated and alcoholic beverages

Alcohol, coffee, caffeinated tea, and energy drinks.
